iPod touch Firmware 2.0, Part 2 (With Remote App)

The iPod touch 2.0 firmware gives you access to the new iTunes App Store, which icon will appear at the home screen. You can also download apps from iTunes 7.7 then later sync it to your iPod. Apps downloaded from the iPod could also be transferred to your computer.

As I said, there a quite a lot of apps available for free, and one my favourites would be the Remote app. It effectively turns your iPod into a remote for iTunes or Apple TV so you can select and play songs without the need to get out of bed :) Perfect for lazy people like YOU.

Screenshot of my home. Notice the App Store icon. Remote, To Do and iMaze are just those free apps I tried.

So here’s how it works. The remote app works through Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth or anything. So you need to connect your computer and iPod to the same Wi-Fi hotspot. Launch Remote and it will discover the iTunes libraries on the computers connected. Mine was named Dzimmo’s Music (only got one here…I only have one wireless network and one computer :P )

Select a library and…

w00t! Lets try to pick a song eh?

First of all, lets just pretend that you didn’t notice Misha Omar in my iTunes because I’m too lazy to blur her name (pa kantoi2? Skati ku mpun lah).

Here I picked the song Everything and it worked :) Just select a song from your iPod and your computer will play it through its speakers, or any speakers you connect it to. Cover arts ARE sent to the iPod though…I just don’t have one for this song here because, urm, you know lah kan?

Video works too! But there’s one enormous problem to this that could lead to a stressful, tiring day: you still have to get your ass up to your computer to maximize the video :( Remote, gimme my full screen button! Or at least bundle some binoculars with this app. *Oh try searching for this video on YouTube. Vewwy cute!*

Not exactly the app that could increase your productivity, but it sure helps you to increase the waist size. But that doesn’t matter right? You bed is too comfortable to part with, not even for a few seconds. Also, you don’t really need this if you use a laptop anyway hehe. The new MacBook Pro (mebe other Macs as well but I’m not sure) doesn’t come with the Apple Remote anymore (available separately for RM79) so this might be a nice substitute.

I’d imagine this would work better during some kind of event. No need to run across the room just to change the song, no need to yell to the DJ what song you want and having him/her end up playing an entirely different song. Also, you don’t even need to look at the computer’s screen. Try to think of a creative manipulation.

Usefulness aside, the Remote app works beautifully but I’d appreciate a full screen button for videos. Anyway, if you noticed, I took screenshots of my iPod right? How did I do that?! NEW in firmware 2.0: Hold the Home button and On/Off button simultaneously at any time to take a screenshot. It will be saved under Photos. Nice one there :)
