Maxis iPhone 3GS for Malaysia Pwns U.S (For Now)
Just in case you didn’t notice, a new iPhone came out Tuesday morning (Malaysian time). It’s called the iPhone 3GS. Don’t bother to search for pics tho, it looks exactly the same…bummer, but hardware-wise the major changes are the 3-megapixel autofocus camera (good for taking photos of your friends’ assignment beautiful flower close-ups and overall speed. Also coming up is the new iPhone OS 3.0, introducing MMS (finally!), copy and paste (yeah iPhone never had that, pity) and new APIs (apps can do much more now). Not gonna list down everything here, go meet Uncle Google. This is not an Apple blog.

iPhone 3G or 3GS? Looks the same. Also available in white, in case you’re racist.
But I want to share something cool today. As you may know, in the US, the iPhone is only available with AT&T, like how it’s only with Maxis here in Malaysia. But then, for certain reasons, AT&T won’t have MMS and tethering services for the next few months.

Now “tethering” may be a new word for you. Basically it means to go online on your notebook using your phone’s 3G connection. Most 3G phones can do this already. Not recommended if you don’t have an unlimited data plan though, it can cost a lot plus some phones will act strange (my phone SE C902 can’t receive calls during tethering for some reason). For some reasons, AT&T doesn’t include tethering as part of the iPhone contract for now. But guess what, for the iPhone 3GS, both MMS and tethering will be available on Maxis. For once, we’re ahead of the U.S., mwahaha! But then Maxis 3G speed falls short when compared to Celcom’s 3.6Mbps, so there you go.

Telcos supporting MMS and tethering. Bravo MAXIS!
Apple also added new keyboard support for more languages like Thailand, Russian and Chinese. What I don’t understand is keyboard support for Malaysian language. Uh Apple, in case you never noticed, we use the same exact alphabets as English. No need for ’support’. I don’t text my friends in jawi.

New keyboard language support.
We got the iPhone 3G like almost 1 year after launch. Now, we’re getting the iPhone 3GS on July 9th, 2009, among the 2nd 3rd batch. Again, bravo Maxis

Wait for it!
OOT but about Maxis: A few weeks ago I had emailed Maxis complaining about the broadband speed and asking what are the procedures to quit the service. They actually called me to talk about it. I was in class when they called so I told them to call the next day, and indeed they did. Now that’s good customer service. And what I noticed is my broadband speed is much better now, even in Senadin. Less DCs and stable speed. I’m estimating an average of 43 kb/s. That’s not bad for a 384 kb/s line, compared to what is was before (downloading in freaking bytes/s was common). I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence that they upgrade the performance in Senadin or was it because of my complaint haha. But I’m glad.
Back to topic, the current iPhone 3G is only $99 with AT&T now so expect Maxis to lower down theirs as well. But hey, the iPhone 3GS supports 7.2 Mbps HSDPA speed. Maxis, upgrade please!
UPDATE: The iPhone 3GS is rumoured to come out on the 19th July. Rumoured.
