    okay, finally downloaded and unzipped – Inside, among other things is the 3 .dmg files (maybe what you mentioned in your post when you first tried) and when i tried to open one it asks for a password. So I guess this is a no go…. guess I’ll be buying… shame since I only bought my touch today…. thanks anyway.

    @Jonathan: try renaming the “.zip” to “.ipsw”. Reportedly seemed to work for some people (not for me though). What do you get when unzipping?

    One other interesting thing – if you’re concerned about the firmware being screwy after you’ve done the update, you can restore it thru itunes and itunes will download a new version direct from apple, after seeing that you have 3.0 on your gadget.

    I did this by accident, after finding the wifi was hanging in a free wifi service everytime I tried to log in (may have also been the service, but just in case I decided to restore…)

    @iMike: you need iTunes 8.2 to do this. And did you download the correct firmware? For iPod touch 1st gen would be ‘1,1′ and 2nd gen would be ‘1,2′.

    @lol: Yes, everything. You need to backup ur iPod first. After restoring, you’ll arrive at a page that asks u to restore from a backup.

    Joe, plug in your iPod to ur computer and wait for iTunes to launch and show the iPod page. Let iTunes backup ur iPod first. When done, Shift+click (Option+click for Macs) the Restore button and select the .ipsw file you downloaded. Then wait

    You need iTunes 8.2 to do this

    deezy, eventho u jailbreak u still need to do the same procedure (download, restore the ipsw) but this will wipe out everything. You need to jailbreak again after upgrading. I’m pretty sure there’s no ‘jailbreak upgrade’. It was always upgrading to a new firmware and re-jailbreak

    hey guys, thanks for a great post.. i keep trying to download the 3.0 software and i keep wasting time and ending up with a folder called “iPod2,1-3″ with a bunch of nonsense files..

    it would be great if someone could help me in someway.. i cant get the ispw file or whatever it is called even though when it is downloading it says it in the status, when it finishes it turns into a folder with many things in it

    @sierra: r u sure ur problem is local to ur ipod? try connecting another pc to the same wifi network…does it work? and also, try to connect ur ipod to a diff wifi network.

    so far ive never encountered anyone having problem with wifi after upgrading to 3.0. however, you can always redo or turn back to 2.1.1 ;p

    is a better mirror for the file. downloads twice as fast.

    option+click (if u’re on a mac) or shift+click (windows) the Restore button. it’ll let you browse for the 3.0 ipsw

    If you are using safari for mac you need to turn off “Open safe files after downloading” or it unzips the file and re-zipping and naming then doesn’t work

    I download iTunes 8.2.0.23 and the firmware. When I do the restore from the file it gets part way through and fails. It says its doing a restore but never completes. Would it be that I have the wrong version of itunes?

    at which point did it fail? the restore should take about 20 mins or so

    on the ipod the progress bar gets about 1/2 way. It fails at the point of installing the firmware. On iTunes it says Firmware successfully installed/upgraded/restored (can’t remember which). Then the iPod restarts and its wiped with just the default apps, but still the 2.2.1 firmware.

    the bar on the ipod got about 1/2 way across. itunes said it had successfully restored/updated the ipod firmware. It restarts, and I get to the default desktop. It gets past verifying the software and saying it is installing it.
